South block was planted to 100% Mendoza clone Chardonnay on our only southern facing site in 2002. Mendoza is a clone noted for its low phenolics, higher acidity, and hen and chicken bunch structure. Vine material was sourced from Leeuwin Estate, in WA it is the predominant Chardonnay clone.
2017 was a later and cooler year in the Yarra Valley. January and February brought perfect ripening conditions, with temperatures in the mid to high 20’s, and cool nights during allowing for retention of acid and fine flavor development. Yields were 7 tonnes per hectare. The block ripens over later than other blocks due to the southerly aspect of this site.
There’s tension and drive to this with its linear focus. An appealing pink grapefruit flavour, white stone fruit gets things rolling picking up ginger spice and the right amount of creamy-lees along the way. It has texture, finishing with fresh lemony acidity and overall, moreish and delicious.
