2016 Barbera

This is our second release of Barbera from TarraWarra. We chose this variety for its inherent structure and intense flavour. It is ideally suited to the Yarra Valley, producing wines with intensity and finesse. The variety is thriving in its location, yielding a wine that is full flavoured, rich and long.

Site Selection: A long north-west facing block with clay loam soils. The block has long produced grapes with subtle flavours and firm structure which is well suited to this clone of Barbera and the preferred style for TarraWarra Estate.

Vintage Notes: 2016 was an excellent vintage in the Yarra Valley. A warmer season produced ripe fruit flavours with good balance. Temperatures hovered in the mid to high twenties from veraison to harvest. Cool nights and mild days gave perfect ripening conditions, with the fruit in perfect condition at harvest.

HUON HOOKE Gourmet Traveller Wine - 100 Top New Release Wines, Aug/Sept 2018
This is an effortless, authentic tasting barbera with raspberry, potpourri and Asian spice aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, soft and fine wth lots of varietal raspberry and loads of charm. The acidity, often said to be high in barbera, is beautifully balanced. 95/100

TONY LOVE Herald Sun Top 20 wines for winter, 17 July 2018
This northwestern Italian staple variety has settled well into a new block in the Yarra, along with its Piedmont companion grape nebbiolo. This iteration is comforting in its rich ad ripe blackberry and plum flavour profile, packed in with generous flesh and warmth. The variety has alively acidity, yet this is integrating now with the fruit richness, and it's gentle in the tannin feels as well.

REGAN DREW Vinonotebook, 7 July 2018
Bright purple in the glass with energetic, electric legs. A little fruit forward with brown spice, cherries, turned earth, baked blueberry and tobacco leaf. Even, balanced palate with boysenberry, cherry, briar and thyme. Fine tannins that are a touch gritty and dark yeasty finish.

HUON HOOKE The Real Review, 20 May 2018
Deepish red colour with a good purple tint. Attractive pot-pourri, red fruit and Asian spice aromas; the wine is soft and spicy with some raspberry varietal touches and light, fine tannins scattered over the end-palate and finish. A charming middle-palate fruit sweetness will win it lots of friends. A very attrractive and authentic barbera, and a gorgeous drink. 95/100
