2015 Barbera

This is our first release of Barbera from TarraWarra Estate. We chose this variety for its inherent structure and intense flavour. It is ideally suited to the Yarra Valley, and we are very excited by this first release. The variety is thriving in its location, yielding a wine that is full flavoured, rich and long.

Site selection: A long north-west facing block with clay loam soils. The block has long produced grapes with subtle flavours and firm structure which is well suited to this clone of Barbera and the preferred style for TarraWarra Estate.

Vintage notes: 2015 was an excellent vintage in the Yarra Valley. A warmer season produced ripe fruit flavours with good balance. Temperatures hovered in the mid to high twenties from veraison to harvest. Cool nights and mild days gave perfect ripening conditions, with the fruit in perfect condition at harvest.

This is TarraWarra's first Barbera release. It comes as a result of an under performing Pinot vineyard planted in 1989, K Block, where 50% was grafted over to the now highly consistent K Block Merlot in 2006. 25% of the remaining vineyard was grafted over to Nebbiolo in 2012 and the other 25% to this Barbera.  A good first up release with plenty of potential for future releases, that's for sure. It carries varietal presence although I felt it sits a little lean mid-palate. Bright and crunchy acidity stands tall and continued to hold its head high on the second day of tasting.  Tomato based dishes and pizza would eat this up.  Drink up to ten years. Good+

CAMPBELL MATTINSON The Wine Front, 16 Jul 2016
Inaugural release. Natural ferment. 27 days on skins. Fermented in 4000l vats before going mostly into puncheons. Mostly old oak; a smidgen new. Clean, polished, fragrant and delicious. This hits the ground running. Fresh cedarwood, a slipperiness to the texture, racy acidity and an attractive combination of red/black cherry and herb-like flavours. Food wine, for the term of its natural life. Succulent little sucker.
