2014 Nebbiolo

This is our first release of Nebbiolo from TarraWarra Estate. We chose this variety for its inherent structure and lifted perfume. It is ideally suited to the Yarra Valley, and we are very excited by this first release. The variety is thriving in its location, yielding a wine that has classic Nebbiolo perfume and tannins.

Site selection: A long north-west facing block with clay loam soils. The block has long produced grapes with full flavours and firm tannin structure. These characters are well suited to Nebbiolo and the preferred style for TarraWarra Estate. The northerly aspect allows for ideal conditions for this late ripening variety.

Vintage notes: 2014 was an excellent vintage in the Yarra Valley. A warmer season produced ripe fruit flavours with good balance. Temperatures hovered in the mid to high twenties from veraison to harvest. Cool nights and mild days gave perfect ripening conditions, with the fruit in perfect condition at harvest.

This is TarraWarra's first Nebbiolo release. It comes as a result of an under performing Pinot vineyard planted in 1989, K Block, where 50% was grafted over to the now highly consistent K Block Merlot in 2006. 25% of the remaining vineyard was grafted over to Barbera in 2012 and the other 25% to this Nebbiolo.

Welcome to savoury city! Take a whiff and the nasal cavity is swarmed by outback dust, dried rose petals, twigs and a suggestion of dried mushroom. More time in the glass brings a red fruit perfume. Chalky and powdery tannins drive the bus, and here lies the key - give it some time to breathe. I liked this much better on the second day of tasting as a result.

There's years in the bag here and time will be your friend.

91/100 - Very good.

Inaugural release. Made from vines grafted over to nebbiolo in 2011; on the estate’s K Block. Natural ferment, open vats, 33 days on skins, matured in all old, large-format oak. It’s a very good wine. Entirely true to the variety. They are surely onto something here. Mint leaves, leather, anise and lots of spice, but in an integrated way. It’s not challenging, It flows, it moves as one, even as the back row of tannin exerts its influence. There’s much to admire and appreciate here. For nebbiolo of this quality the price is most reasonable.
