2012 Reserve Chardonnay

Racked directly to barrel after whole-bunch pressing, this wine is the purest expression of TarraWarra Chardonnay. Made without yeast or acid addition, the fruit batches from each block are kept entirely separate in barrel over the 10 months in oak. It is crossflow filtered without fining before bottling at the Estate.

A wine of very fine complexity it displays lime and white peach aromas. The flavour is long and seamless on the palate with fruit that is tightly wound with minerality and lime zest.

A wine to drink and enjoy now or cellar for 10 or more years. It is an exciting follow on from the 2011.

Vine age & features: The fruit is all selected from our original vineyard planted in 1983.

Site selection: The heritage blocks of B and C and D have a north-west aspect and represent a perfect site for Chardonnay. The two blocks have deep soils and a cool micro-climate.

Vintage notes: 2012 was an excellent vintage in the Yarra Valley. Ideal conditions persisted throughout the growing season, with temperatures hovering in the mid to high twenties from veraison to harvest. Cool nights and mild days gave perfect ripening conditions, with the fruit in perfect condition at harvest.

Made from 2 clones of Chardonnay: Mendoza and P58, hand picked from the original estate vineyard planted in 1983.  Luminous gold in the glass whilst the French oak spice mixes intoxicatingly with white rocks, ripe melon and fleshy peach to almost overwhelm by subtlety.

Full palate without being anywhere near flabby: peachy stone fruit is pierced with those quartz rock mineral skewers, holding them tightly, firmly in line. The length of flavour runs to a to almost Riesling-esque lime, merely hinting at how long this wine will hold it’s statuesque head high. Definitively a wine that you want to have in your mouth now…and tomorrow…and next month, and next year.

JEREMY OLIVER, September 2014
One of the finest wines ever made at TarraWarra, if not the finest, has a smoky and mineral bouquet of grapefruit, melon and white peach deftly knit with smoky oak, waxy reductive notes and a briny hint of oyster shell. It’s full to medium in weight, delivering a long, ultra-smooth palate of spotless peach, pear, apple and grapefruit flavour underpinned by creamy vanilla, clove and cinnamon oak influences and wrapped in a seamless cut of tangy acidity. Wonderful complexity, minerality and attitude.  I rate the wine 19.1/20 or 96/100, with a drinking window between 2020-2024. See what you think.

HUON HOOKE, October 2013
Palish yellow hue. Mealy aromas, restrained and fresh, undeveloped. Some marzipan notes. Very tight and refined, fresh and crisp, lots of energy and poise. Great balance and harmony. Deep-set grapefruit and lemon flavours. Very young, but already complex and rich and multi-faceted. Will be one of the best. 96/100
'High ranking wines' #1 of 43 Chardonnays tasted from the Yarra Valley.

MATT GRANFIELD, Indie Wine Guide, 9 March 2014
It’s Yarra Valley Chardonnay. And it’s spectacular, as always. The 2012 vintage was perfect.  The fruit was perfect. The soil was deep. The air was cool. The wine is limey, buttery, almost like a grand old Semillon, but with the nobility of oak. I think TarraWarra make the best Chardonnay in Australia, and the 2012 edition is as good as ever. more

LESTER JESBERG Winewise Bulletin, October 2013
This is a gem of a chardonnay with plenty of power and lees character. The white nectarine flavours fill a tightly structured palate balanced by uplifting acidity. One to cellar. Outstanding
