2012 K-Block Merlot

The K-Block Merlot thrived in 2012. The low yielding older vines produced beautiful, balanced fruit with true varietal expression.  The tannin structure found in the clone and the block give palate definition to the opulent fruit characters.

Vine age & features: Vertical shoot positioning. Grafted in 2006 onto 20 year old Pinot Noir MV6 rootstocks.

Site selection: A long north-west facing block with clay loam soils. The block has long produced grapes with subtle flavours and firm structure which is well suited to this clone of Merlot and the preferred style for TarraWarra Estate.

Vintage notes: 2012 was an excellent vintage in the Yarra Valley.  Ideal conditions persisted throughout the growing season, with tempertures hovering in the mid to high twenties from veraison to harvest.  Cool nights and mild days gave perfect ripening conditions, with the fruit in perfect condition at harvest, a month earlier than 2011.

If you're one of those people who are still to be convinced merlot, then try this beauty from the Yarra Valley.  It's soft and succulent as merlot should be, but there's complexity aplenty.  Fleshy black fruits ranging from black olives to dark plum flood the mouth, with a hint of tobacco-ey flavour as well and supportive tannin.  It's all very seamless and smooth.

MATT GRANFIELD redwhiteandbrew.com.au, July 2014
Looks like purple. Tastes like purple. Purple rain. This is a Princely Merlot, wearing a mulberry beret and a mouthfeel like cream. Merlot has earned its a bad name for being as resonant as a synthesiser, but this little red Corvette could make doves cry.

JAMES HALLIDAY Wine Companion Magazine, Aug/Sept 2014
Bright, clear colour; a distinguished merlot with a fragrant bouquet and a lithe, medium bodied palate: cassis and plum are joined by cedary oak, the finish beautifully balanced and detailed. 94/100
