2011 Reserve Chardonnay

Racked directly to barrel after whole-bunch pressing, the fruit batches from each block are kept entirely separate in barrel over the 10 months in oak. Some wild fermentation provided interesting aromas and texture to the final blend.

Although a very high acid year, we did no malolactic fermentation, knowing how the wines develop in bottle.

A wine of very fine complexity it displays lime and white peach aromas. The flavour is long and seamless on the palate with fruit that is tightly wound with minerality and lime zest.

A wine to drink and enjoy now or cellar for 10 or more years. We believe it is one of the best Reserves we’ve made.

Vine age & features: The majority of fruit comes from vines at 28 years of age, with a portion of fruit coming from younger, seven year old vines. All Chardonnay vines are vertical spur pruned.

Site selection: The heritage blocks of B and C and D have a north-west aspect and represent a perfect site for Chardonnay. The two blocks have deep soils and a cool micro-climate. South Park is TarraWarra Estate’s only south facing vineyard. Planted with Mendoza clone, the longer ripening period helps to provide structure and fresh acidity to the Reserve wine blend.

Vintage notes: One of our coolest vintages, 2011 presented many seasonal challenges. High rainfall and late ripening gave us our vintage mantra – “Be Brave”. We held off picking for 3 weeks, and were rewarded with fruit with excellent flavor and in perfect condition.

Reviews:

HUON HOOKE, Gourmet Traveller Wine, August / September 2013
Tight, mineral aromas evoke cold steel and wet stone: attributes that are reminiscent of Chablis. Taut, tense, tangy palate with tightness and brightness. It also has good line and length. Beautifully understated, yet intense modern Chardonnay

JANE FAULKNER, The Saturday Age, 15 June 2013
TarraWarra's reserve wines comprise the best barrels of fruit from the oldest vineyards and, hence, the quality of this wine is without question. While the 2011 has the distinct and appealing TarraWarra stone-fruit richness and wood spice from the barrels, there's a restraint here ensuring the wine isn't too opulent. It's nicely composed, yet there's a depth of flavour with zest and Nashi pear, roundness and creaminess on the full palate and plenty of savouriness. A perfect chardonnay with roast chicken sprinkled with sumac. From Prince Wine Store, South Melbourne.

RALPH KYTE-POWELL The Age Epicure, 21 May 2013
More subdued than usual, 2011 TarraWarra Chardonnay still has tons of personality. White peach, cashew, citrus and creamy aromas have a balanced seasoning of quality oak, and the palate is very finely textured, long and complete. Classy Yarra Valley chardonnay.
