2011 J-Block Shiraz

Museum Release

The combination of site, vintage and clonal selection, has produced a wine which epitomises cool climate Shiraz.  A co-ferment of the Shiraz with two percent Roussanne gives a lifted perfume to the 2011 wine. This wine will age well for at least 10 years.

Vine age & features: Planted in 2007, the low yielding, close planted vines produce long elongated bunches with minimal vigour. Vertical shoot positioned canopy, cane pruned.

Site selection: The shallow soils, free drainage and high elevation of J-Block made this the perfect site for Shiraz vines. The soils include lean granite, loam and clay. North-west facing.

Vintage notes: The sites of each block are ideally suited to their clones.  The 2011 vintage was cooler, with high rainfall through the season.  Although not perfect conditions, the selection of site, variety and clone allowed the fruit to develop optimum flavours given time.

Reviews:

HUON HOOKE, November 2013
Medium red with a slight purple tinge, but a rather light colour for shiraz. Attractive, mellow, forward-developed and quite complex bouquet, recalling cedar and charcuterie and roasting pan aromas. Red fruits rather than black. Medium-bodied and soft with ample tannins. A savoury shiraz which is a far cry from bright, bold simple fruit styles. Lovely fruit sweetness in the middle. Very good drinkability, with complexity and mellow charms.
