Yarra Valley Profile

The Yarra Valley is 40 kilometres east of Melbourne in the most southerly part of Australia's mainland. At an elevation of between 50-400 metres the climate is cool relative to other Australian wine regions but warmer than Burgundy and slightly cooler than Bordeaux. The Yarra Valley was Victoria's first wine growing district with the first plantings recorded in 1838. Due to the diversity of the microclimate and soil types, a range of varieties are successfully grown in the Yarra Valley and there are currently more than 70 wineries operating in the region.

The region provides a comprehensive range of tourism experiences including Healesville Sanctuary and the TarraWarra Museum of Art. Accommodation options range from resort style to self-catering holiday cottages and B&Bs dotted throughout this scenic part of Victoria.
