2012 Estate Chardonnay

Winemaker notes: Made with the same approach as the Reserve wine, the differences in this wine result from some tank fermentation as well as a selection of different barrels and fruit parcels than those used to make the Reserve Chardonnay.

The wine has grapefruit and lemon zest aromas with underlying notes of cashew nuts. The palate has a creamy yet fine texture derived from 10 months on lees and a lovely drive with persistence of flavour. With oak and tank maturation, the wine shows an elegant complexity with appealing freshness.

Site selection: Fruit for the Estate wine was sourced from 10-27 year-old vines across various blocks. The TarraWarra Estate vineyard has a northerly aspect across high sloping hill-sides, which provides good drainage and air circulation.  The grapes are all hand harvested at approximately seven tonnes per hectare.

Vintage notes: The 2012 vintage was relatively warm in comparison to 2011.  The ideal conditions allowed us to pick the Chardonnay at optimum flavour development and in excellent condition.  This allows us to avoid the use of acid and fining agents in making the wine.

RAY JORDAN West Australian, 22 May 2014
This is a delightful example of Yarra Valley chardonnay in a good year. It’s restrained and refined with a lightness of touch. Fragrant, with floral nutty characters against a faint backdrop of lightly roasted cashew and grapefruit. A little new oak has been worked in but not overdone. Excellent. 91/100

WINSOR DOBBIN Wine of the Week, 1 April 2014
There is a smart new look for the estate wines from TarraWarra Estate, and while the prices of many leading Australian chardonnays are nudging upwards, this represents excellent value for money. Beautifully balanced, it shows the attention paid in the vineyard, where the grapes are hand-picked, and in the winery, where Clare Halloran is in excellent form. From a very good vintage this is a fruit-driven wine with quality oak hiding away behind the curtains. Think citrus and stone fruits notes, cleanliness and great drive.

JAMES HALLIDAY The Weekend Australian, 1 February 2014
Vineyard manager Stuart Sissins and Halloran have progressively replanted most of the estate chardonnay with improved clones. Given the great 2012 vintage, it is no surprise that there is a complex pattern of stone fruit and citrus flavours, neatly balanced by a mix of new and used French oak.
