On the road in Far North Queensland…

When packing the bags for my most recent trip to support our distributor Negociants Australia, it felt very much like I was packing for an overseas holiday. Melbourne was a chilly six degrees, fire on, stew bubbling away on the stove, electric blanket on. The next day would see me in shorts and eating a bucket of prawns next to the beach. This just made me realise we really do live in the lucky country. Three pairs of shorts, couple of shirts and beach towel, good bye chilly days and ‘hello’ Far North Queensland for the week, an easy three hour flight from Melbourne.

The week was to take in the towns of Airlie Beach, Townsville and the final stop Cairns for the Negociants / Samuel Smith & Son Trade Roadshow. With 15 wineries and over 200 wines on taste attendance was fantastic in each stop. Coralsea Resort in Airlie Beach was easily one of the nicer spots to conduct a tasting as you can see in the photo.

It was all about our recently released 2013 Estate Pinot Noir Rose by the feedback and I can understand why with that weather, 28 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Coralsea Resort has a fantastic vista being positioned on the corner taking in 180 degrees of water views. If you’re planning a trip up be sure to mention TarraWarra Estate to the General Manager, Greg Waites for a special rate and bottle of 2013 Reserve Chardonnay upon check-in.

Day two we boarded the bus to head north to Townsville. A great morning stop-off was in Bowen with an amazing cooked breakfast by the proprietor of the Grand View Hotel, Mike McLean. Turned out the pub façade featured in the filming of the movie ‘Australia’ with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Mike told me they trucked in 20 tonnes of dirt to convert the outside into a bush setting and filmed there for seven weeks, very good for business he noted!

Back on the bus there was very little chat, think a few were catching up on sleep from what was missed the nights before. The ‘Team Shirt’ was unveiled by Qld State Manager Cameron Wright as you can see in the photo. An interesting choice by Cameron! A beautiful dinner followed at the Watermark restaurant where a ‘bespoke’ pasta dish was created by Negociants Area Manager Chris ‘Clubby’ Denton. Not happy with the offering on the menu he went straight to the chef and asked for a special seafood pasta. I ordered the same and for the first time I could not finish a seafood pasta loaded with so much fresh blue swimmer crab meat. Delicious and worth a stop at.

To finish the trip we flew to Cairns were it was really like being overseas, 30 degrees, tourists everywhere in their summer best. A great trade tasting was held in the Pullman Hotel, with the biggest attendance for the week with just over 120 people. People fell in love with our Estate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and once again our Rose. All work perfectly with the humid weather and light clean fresh food on offer, no stews on offer up here. Our last group dinner was held at a real highlight of the trip, Waterbar & Grill. Try the gigantic prawns char-grilled with a beautiful chermoula sauce. I spent a couple of nights at The Shangri La which was superb and well worth stopping at on your next trip.

Big thanks go firstly to all the amazing trade we met over the week and to the team at Negociants Australia lead by Damon Jackson and Cameron Wright. As we hear the feedback over the next few weeks about where our wines have found new homes I will be sure to share for those of you escaping the cold!

Home for a couple of weeks now to cook some more stews, drink some J Block Shiraz before we head to Sydney at the end of the month for our Annual Reserve Wine Club Dinner at Hotel Centennial, which can be booked in the ‘Events’ page.

Cheers!
