Vineyard

Under the watchful eye of winemaker Clare Halloran, all of TarraWarra Estate’s wines are meticulously grown, handpicked, vinified and aged on the estate. Each bottle expresses the unique terroir of the TarraWarra Estate site, comprised of 19 distinctive hillside blocks over 28 hectares. Each is planted with carefully selected clones that contribute individual characteristics to our wines.

Since the first vines were planted in 1983, the Besen family has set out to produce wines characterised by quality and integrity. Those initial 6 ha acres of vines were the first to take advantage of the north-facing lay of the land, which provides perfect conditions for premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Today, the original Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blocks have made way for new varietals that are best suited to the micro-climes and conditions of each block, thanks to considered cloning and grafting. Earlier this year we released our first Nebbiolo and Barbera vintages. The varieties came about after travelling to Northern Italy, where the climate and conditions are similar to here in the Yarra Valley. In 2011, we grafted half of the K Block to Nebbiolo and Barbera.

Exciting, single block wines have also joined our flagship Reserve Chardonnay and Pinot Noir: the K-Block Merlot; J-Block Shiraz; and a Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier (MRV). TarraWarra Estate also produces an Estate range by blending from blocks across the vineyard.

Vineyard Manager, Stuart Sissins, emphasises innovation and sustainable vineyard practices on the Estate. He’s introduced composting, re-uses grape marc for cattle feed and uses organically certified fertilisers and other products where possible. Clare and the winemaking team have also implemented energy saving initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of TarraWarra Estate, including the introduction of an efficient refrigeration system, where heat is captured and used to heat water across the winery and administration office. Water is also re-used for vineyard irrigation.
