2011 Viognier Roussanne Marsanne

With a strong heritage in the Yarra Valley, these three Rhone Valley white varieties have performed incredibly well across just a small area on the estate.  The combination of these three varieties builds a wine with lifted honeysuckle perfume, fine acidity, great texture and length.  The overall effect is a savoury wine that is ideal with a range of food types.

Vine age & features: Each variety was grafted in 2006 to rootstocks which are between 15 to 20 years old.

Site selection: North facing vineyard, good air flow and exposure to sunlight hours. Steep slopes and a clay loam soil provide excellent site drainage.

Vintage notes: The 2011 vintage was marked by a very cool summer, with well above average rainfall. All our white varieties from this vintage were excellent, the cooler conditions bringing more finesse. Later picking allowed for optimum flavour development.

Reviews:

JEREMY PRINGLE Wine Will Eat Itself - 29 August, 2012
Waxy and gently viscous with terrific textural appeal. A shaft of ensconced acidity runs through it and there’s a satisfying phenolic tug at the end. It smells of honeysuckle, Turkish apricots and nectarine. There’s a suggestion of poached fruits on the palate but it’s mostly fresh and savoury. Herbal tea and spiced orange rind pop up along with a pleasant, understated bitter nuttiness on the back-palate.

Personally I think this will improve for at least a couple of years and beyond that it just depends on how much you enjoy the waxy, developed characters of aged Rhône varietal white blends. I rather fancy them myself and I can’t see this wine falling over anytime soon. 93 Very Good – Excellent
