2010 Reserve Chardonnay

Racked directly to barrel after whole-bunch pressing, the fruit batches from each block are kept entirely separate in barrel over the 10 months in oak. Some wild fermentation provided interesting aromas and texture to the final blend.  A wine of fine complexity it displays lime and white peach aromas. The flavour is long and seamless on the palate with fruit that is tightly wound with minerality and lime zest. A wine to drink and enjoy now or cellar for 10 or more years.

Vine age & features: The majority of fruit comes from vines at 27 years of age, with a portion of fruit coming from younger, seven year old vines. All Chardonnay vines were vertical spur pruned.

Site selection: The heritage blocks of B and C have a north-west aspect and represent a perfect site for Chardonnay. The two blocks have deep soils and a cool micro-climate. South Park is TarraWarra Estate’s only south facing vineyard. Planted with Mendoza clone, the longer ripening period helps to provide structure and fresh acidity to the Reserve wine blend.

Vintage notes: Close to a perfect vintage, 2010 presented an ideal summer for grape development, with warm days and cool nights. Rainfall during mid-spring meant there was minimal irrigation required and next to no disease pressure.

Reviews:

JAMES HALLIDAY Australian Wine Companion, 2013 Edition
A reserved wine by name and nature, with subdued citrus, stone fruits and spice on the bouquet; the palate is lively and shows grip and texture, with the finish ultimately being long, generous, fresh and expansive.

LESTER JESBERG Winewise, June 2012
A vibrant, complex chardonnay with strong underlying white peach aroma and flavour. The fruit is supported by lightly-toasted nuts and struck match characteristics. Palate-wise, there’s creaminess, balance and very satisfying length. A brilliant wine that will age slowly for 5-10 years. Outstanding.

HUON HOOKE Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine,1 July 2012
This is a generous, full-bodied, comfortingly old-fashioned style of Aussie chardonnay, and also a very good one.  Honey, malt and roasted hazelnut aromas with a reductive overlay. In the mouth it’s rich, and warm, savoury and long.
